Kerry Jane Elizabeth Katona, or as you may know her, Kerry Katona, was born on 6th September 1980. She is an English singer-songwriter and television personality. She was best known for being a member of girl group Atomic Kitten from 1998 until she first departed in 2001 and then again from 2012 until her second departure later in 2017.

Kerry is also widely known for being the winner of the third series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2004, which crowned her the first queen of the jungle. Kerry was also runner-up of Celebrity Big Brother 8 in 2011.

Kerry: Early Life

Kerry was born in Warrington, Cheshire. Her maternal grandfather is Hungarian who fled Budapest to London during the Second World War. As a child, she was placed in care and brought up by four sets of foster parents and attended eight different schools. In an exclusive unfiltered interview, Kerry Katona revealed that she has big plans for herself, and vowed she would always be successful despite how difficult her childhood was.

Atomic Kitten Days

In 1999, at 18 years old, Kerry Katona rose to fame as a member of girl group Atomic Kitten, a UK all-female pop trio made up of Kerry Katona, Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon. Their debut single “Right Now” was released in November 1999 and reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Their second single “See Ya” followed in March 2000 and was an even bigger success, reaching number six.

Following on from this success, Atomic Kitten performed an Asian tour and scored their first number one hit there with “Cradle”. The album, “Right Now”, was first released in Japan on 16th March 2000 and subsequently released in the UK on the 23rd October 2000 following the release of two further singles, “I Want Your Love” and “Follow Me”. In 2000, the group also recorded a cover version of “The Locomotion” for the movie “Thomas and the Magic Railroad”.

It wasn’t until the release of their single “Whole Again” that Atomic Kitten received their first number one hit in the UK. The single stayed at the top for four consecutive weeks.

Kerry on the Telly

Kerry married Westlife singer Brian McFadden and took on his surname, then Kerry moved into television work. She appeared on and presented a few different entertainment programmes such as Britain’s Sexiest…, Loose Women and elimiDATE.

She also appeared on Lily Savage’s Blankety Blank in 2001. It was in February 2004 that Kerry won the third series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! In July 2004, Kerry Katona and Brian McFadden appeared as judges on the RTE talent show “You’re a Star”, which was used to select the Republic of Ireland’s Eurovision Song Contest entry. Once Kerry separated from Brian, however, she reverted back to her maiden name.

In July 2005, Kerry starred in “My Fair Kerry” on ITV, where she attempted to transform herself from ladette to lady. Between 2007 and 2009, Kerry was the subject of three MTV reality tv shows: Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love, Kerry Katona: Whole Again, and Kerry Katona: What’s the Problem?

Kerry’s latest reality show Kerry Coming Clean aired in June 2010. Kerry was also a contestant on Series 6 of Dancing on Ice where she was paired with English ice skater Daniel Whiston. In 2011, Kerry was voted the runner-up in Celebrity Big Brother, losing out to Paddy Doherty who won the show. In 2019, Kerry appeared in the sixth series of E4 series Celebs Go Dating.

Kerry: Family Life

Kerry Katona has five children from three different marriages. She married former Westlife star, Brian McFadden in January 2002, they have two daughters together.

Brian filed for divorce in September 2004 and their divorce was finalised in December 2006. In February 2007 Kerry married taxi driver Mark Croft. They have a daughter and a son together.

The pair divorced in 2011. Kerry then married former rugby league player George Kay in September 2014, they have one daughter together. George Kay died in July 2019 after an overdose.

She has been dating her current partner, Personal Trainer Ryan Mahoney, for three years. He proposed to her during a family holiday to Spain in 2020.

Mental Health Awareness

In 2005 Kerry Katona was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been campaigning to increase awareness of mental health problems. In recent months, Kerry has stated she has turned her life around and wants to change up her image by focusing on being a businesswoman.
